Samana Horizons: A vision of Sustainable Living in the Dominican Republic

In the heart of the Dominican Republic, Samana Horizons embodies the perfect blend of nature and sustainability. Located in the enchanting Samaná Peninsula, the project conceptualizes a harmonious balance between nature and sustainable living. Situated in a natural environment, the project aims to emphasize the connection between people and nature. To achieve this, the project emerges from the separation of the program, creating terraces that function as intermediate spaces, enhancing life within the project and its connection with the surroundings. Conceived modularly, Samana Horizons allows for practical construction and seamless expansion, making it adaptable to the evolving needs of its inhabitants. The project incorporates several sustainable principles. It is powered by a solar panel system installed on the sloping roofs, ensuring a renewable energy source. The architectural design features double-height ceilings that facilitate natural ventilation; warm air rises and is expelled through cross-ventilation, maintaining a cool indoor environment. Local wood is utilized as the primary building material, emphasizing the project’s commitment to sustainability and supporting the local economy. Additionally, the roofs are equipped with a rainwater harvesting system; the collected water is treated and repurposed for the project's needs. This innovative approach not only conserves water but also promotes self-sufficiency. Furthermore, the presence of a pool enhances humidity in the environment, contributing to natural temperature regulation and creating a comfortable living space. Farming is a vision for the future of tourism, allowing for an immersive and enriching experience that connects visitors with the local culture and environment. Samana Horizons leverages the fertile lands of the Samaná Peninsula, which support a variety of crops including yams, plantains (cooking bananas), yautia roots, ginger, rulo bananas, guineo bananas, and sweet potatoes. The project plans to integrate agritourism activities, offering visitors the chance to engage in farming practices, learn about sustainable agriculture, and even participate in the harvest. This hands-on experience not only educates tourists about local agricultural traditions but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the land and its produce. Samana Horizons stands as a testament to the potential of sustainable living, blending the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic with innovative design and community resilience. It is a vision of paradise that does not compromise but harmonizes with the environment, offering a blueprint for future developments in similar regions.
